The New England Patriots got their feet wet on Wednesday, holding a 90-minute session to kick off their 2025 training camp. On Thursday, they will return to the fields behind Gillette Stadium for the second session — one expected to follow a similar ramp-up pattern.
Here is all you need to know about practice No. 2.
Schedule
The Patriots’ second training camp session will again take place on the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium. As are most other sessions, it is open to the general public at no cost.
- 9:15 a.m. ET: Gates open
- 10:15 a.m. ET: Practice
- ca. 12 p.m. ET: Player availability (Rhamondre Stevenson, Kendrick Bourne, Morgan Moses, Mike Onwenu, Christian Barmore, Jabrill Peppers)
As always, the schedule is tentative and subject to change. For more information, please visit our Pats Pulpit Training Camp Guide.
Story of the day
After being cleared for full practice participation, Stefon Diggs was actively involved during Wednesday’s first practice of the summer. The veteran offseason signing hauled in two catches from Drake Maye while simultaneously looking good running routes both on the inside and on the outside of the formation.
Serving as a starter-level contributor at the Z-receiver spot, Diggs’ workload will be something to keep an eye on today. Will he continue to fill a prominent role atop the depth chart, or will the Patriots try to both mix and match their personnel and manage the 31-year-old’s exposure?
Injuries to monitor
NFI: S Josh Minkins
PUP: WR Mack Hollins, TE Austin Hooper, OT Vederian Lowe
DNP: WR Ja’Lynn Polk
The Patriots had solid attendance during Wednesday’s practice, welcoming three players — CB Carlton Davis, LB Jahlani Tavai, WR Jeremiah Webb — back from pre-camp injury lists. On the other hand, Ja’Lynn Polk was a surprise absentee; the second-year wideout underwent shoulder surgery during the offseason and was a limited participant in the spring.
Players to watch
WR Kayshon Boutte: Boutte emerged as the Patriots’ top perimeter wide receiver in 2024, and it looks like he is keeping this role early in training camp. Something did change, though: he was not used exclusively at the X-receiver spot, but instead moved all over the formation. Boutte was projected as a roster bubble player or trade candidate earlier in the offseason, but it is clear the team views him highly enough to give him prominent reps.
WR Kyle Williams: Even though he was not used as a starter, Williams had an active practice on Wednesday that included two receptions from Drake Maye — among them arguably the best catch of the day — and also was part of the punt returner rotation. Training camp is about stringing days together, though, so the third-round rookie will need to show some consistency to prove himself worthy of a regular role.
FB Brock Lampe: The Patriots refrained from using a traditional fullback the last few seasons, but they have one on their roster now: Brock Lampe. The undrafted rookie making the team seems like a realistic possibility at this point in time given that he saw some reps with the starting offense on Wednesday. A sign of things to come?
OL Jared Wilson: New England rotated its interior offensive linemen quite regularly on Wednesday, and Wilson was one of the first men up: he was the No. 2 center behind veteran Garrett Bradbury and also saw action at guard. The third-rounder is still a depth option at this point in his career, but he could be in a position to play his way into the starting lineup if Bradbury shows some weakness.
S Jaylinn Hawkins: The Patriots’ safety group is a crowded one, with Hawkins one of the players competing for a spot alongside roster locks Kyle Dugger, Jabrill Peppers and Craig Woodson. On Wednesday, he was the third player in the rotation while possibly also carving out another role: he was used as the personal protector on the punt team. His usage on special teams — potentially taking over a role held by Dell Pettus last year — will be interesting to see.
