Why Patrick Mahomes is one of the best QBs of all-time
“Mahomes is only 29 years old, and already has the resume of a first-ballot Hall of Famer. The 2017 first-round pick has won three Super Bowls, is a three-time Super Bowl MVP, a two-time NFL MVP and has twice thrown for more than 5,000 yards in a season. The face of Kansas City’s dynasty, Mahomes changed the way the position of quarterback is played, turning off-platform throws and no-look passes from reckless to routine. He’s the standard for modern quarterbacks.” - Matt Verderame
Each NFL Team’s Updated Cap Space and Biggest Question Heading into Training Camp | Bleacher Report
Biggest Question: Has the Left Tackle Problem Been Solved?
The Chiefs know that protecting Patrick Mahomes has to be their highest priority. As long as he has time in the pocket, they are going to have an effective offense.
Unfortunately, his protection detail had a flaw at left tackle last season. Kingsley Suamataia was unable to take over the role, and the Chiefs were eventually forced to slide Joe Thuney outside from his guard spot.
Now, Thuney is gone and the Chiefs have placed bets on Jaylon Moore and Josh Simmons to fill the role.
Moore, 28, got a two-year, $30 million contract in free agency this offseason. He has promise, but he’s only started 12 games in his four years as a reserve for the 49ers.
They also spent a first-round pick on Josh Simmons. He’s coming back from a torn ACL, but he is supposed to be full-go for camp.
Ideally, one of their newest additions will prove they are ready to start in Week 1. The Chiefs also have to figure out if Suamataia can cut it at left guard, so the entire left side of the line is worth following in the coming weeks.

Kansas City Chiefs
WR Rashee Rice
He saw just four games his sophomore season before tearing up his knee chasing down a defender after a Patrick Mahomes interception. But the good news amid the bad news: Rice did not tear his ACL but his LCL, which meant a shorter recovery time. Thus, the wideout was back on the field this spring for the Chiefs, and coach Andy Reid said he expects him to be full-go for the start of training camp. Rice’s return will be crucial for an offense looking to rediscover its explosiveness. He had 938 receiving yards as a rookie in 2023 and was building off that early in Year 2. Kansas City has been waiting for a WR1 to step into the role vacated by Tyreek Hill in 2022. He’s not Hill, but Rice might be this team’s best bet. He has future Pro Bowler written all over him. — Zak Keefer
Kansas City Chiefs training camp 2025 preview: Key dates, notable additions, biggest storylines | NFL.com
2) With the Chiefs selecting Jalen Royals in April’s draft, Kansas City is looking for pass catchers who can contribute in any capacity. Kansas City’s leading wide receiver in yards in 2024 was rookie Xavier Worthy, as Marquise Brown missed most of the regular season due to a shoulder injury suffered in the preseason and Rashee Rice, Mahomes’ top target, suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 4. It led to the Chiefs having a less potent offense for a majority of the season and into the playoffs. \With Kansas City seeing DeAndre Hopkins and Mecole Hardman sign with new teams this offseason, training camp will provide a sneak peak at the WR depth chart before Week 1.

Sources - 49ers’ Jauan Jennings wants new deal or trade | ESPN
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who is scheduled to make $7.5 million in the final year of his deal, wants a new contract or a trade, sources told ESPN on Monday.
It marks the second straight summer the 49ers are in this situation with a receiver who wants to be paid or traded — and this year’s situation is indirectly tied to last year’s scenario with Brandon Aiyuk.
Jennings has approached the 49ers about his request, but little progress has been made, a source told ESPN. If a new deal is not reached by the time training camp starts next week, Jennings plans to request a trade to a team willing to pay him.
Entering 2025, Jennings is slated to count $4.258 million against the cap in the final year of the two-year, $15.39 million extension he signed last offseason.
‘I feel great’: Why 49ers need Christian McCaffrey to stay healthy | USA Today
“I feel great. This offseason, I’ve spent a lot of time building back a base (and) starting from scratch. A lot of it was rehab,” McCaffrey said at 49ers’ minicamp. “I wanted to put myself in a position where I didn’t miss a day of OTAs and I could practice and play football again, be healthy and not miss a day. I did that and now it’s kind of kick back up the training again. I feel great.”
The 49ers need McCaffrey to return to his 2023 form where he led league in rushing yards (1,459), touches (339), yards from scrimmage (2,023) and touchdowns from scrimmage (21) on the way to winning the 2023 NFL Offensive Player of the Year award. San Francisco lost several key players this offseason, a list that includes Dre Greenlaw, Charvarius Ward, Deebo Samuel, Talanoa Hufanga, Javon Hargrave and Leonard Floyd.

Chiefs Roster: ESPN rankings explain all 2025 offensive line moves
6. Joe Thuney, Chicago Bears
Highest ranking: 1
Lowest ranking: Unranked
Age: 32
Last year’s ranking: 4
One of most impressive football feats of the 2024 NFL season was Thuney, at 6-foot-5 and 304 pounds, successfully transitioning from guard to left tackle late in the season. The Chiefs were in a bind, and the offensive line needed help, and Thuney stabilized it. Chiefs coach Andy Reid lauded the move, saying Thuney never complained — and he held his own incredibly well.
Thuney is always among the best statistically — his 96.4 pass block win rate is tied for first among guards with Denver’s Ben Powers — but his versatility was on full display last year.
“Complete package: Speed, athletic ability, hand placement, toughness, instincts,” an AFC executive said. “I think power is a slight deficiency. Versatility isn’t.”
Coaches say he has got elite grip strength — once he is attached to a defensive lineman, he is hard to shake.
“All technique, instincts and smarts with Joe,” a separate AFC executive said. “Physical skills are on the decline.”
My take
If you were looking for an explanation for the team’s offensive line moves during the last calendar year, Fowler’s two articles tell the whole story.
By these rankings, Humphrey is the league’s top interior offensive lineman. That explains the four-year, $72 million contract he received last August. Smith is among the top 5 on the interior, which illustrates the team’s decision to place the franchise tag on him — and its desire to sign a long-term deal with the former Tennessee star. Thuney — just outside the top 5, but now getting long in the tooth — was traded to the Bears, giving the team the cap space needed to sign left tackle Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million deal. He was the backup plan if the team couldn’t reel in Ohio State left tackle Josh Simmons the NFL Draft. Now that Simmons is on the team, Moore serves as his insurance as the rookie recovers from his 2024 injury and acclimatizes himself to the NFL.
You’ve got to love it when a plan comes together, right?
