Michael La Sasso... have yourself a damn day.

The junior amateur golfer out of Ole Miss who won the NCAA individual men’s national championship already this year is playing in the PGA Tour 3M Open this weekend. He made the cut literally on the cut line at -5 after the first two rounds of play.

La Sasso clearly drank some of that Michael Jordan water from Space Jam this morning, because he went out and carded a third round 63 (-8) and at the time of writing jumped from tied for 58th to tied for second.

Scoring 63 set the amateur record low on the PGA Tour for this season, besting Auburn golfer Jackson Koivun who shot a 64 earlier this year.

Finishing one stroke off the lead is a great day for the amateur golfer playing amongst a competitive PGA Tour field. How close he’ll stay to that lead as other golfers play through the afternoon will remain to be seen though the ESPN+ broadcast mentioned higher wind gusts that could inhibit lower scores late in the day.

One thing is certain - La Sasso will have a much later start time on Sunday for the final round of the 3M Open. With a little more rest and youth on his side, it could be an electric finish for the national champ.
