Ohio State and the entirety of the college football landscape are quickly approaching the start of the 2025 regular season. The summer months have been busy for Ryan Day and the Buckeyes, as the upcoming campaign holds the highest of expectations after Ohio State won the College Football Playoff national championship last season.
With the start of the season quickly approaching, many of the headlines surrounding the Ohio State football team will focus on position battles and the upcoming season, and deservedly
so. However, that doesn’t mean recruiting will take a back seat.
Day and the coaching staff are always hitting the recruiting trail head on, whether it be for this year’s recruiting class or future classes. The hard work continues to payoff, as the Buckeyes recently learned they are trending for one of the nation’s top offensive tackles in the 2027 class, who also reigns from Ohio.
2027 four-star offensive tackle Kalel Johnson (Cincinnati, OH / Archbishop Hoban) is no stranger to the Buckeyes. Johnson has made multiple visits with the Buckeyes already and he received an official scholarship offer in April of last year. Ohio State has remained in contact with him following the offer, and the effort is paying dividends as the Buckeyes are quickly becoming the team to beat.
Recently, Ohio State received a Crystal Ball Prediction from 247Sports Ohio State Insider, Bill Kurelic.
Crystal Ball Alert!

Ohio State has received their 2nd Crystal Ball to land Kalel Johnson.
This 2nd CB was made by Greg Smith at ON3. ON3 giving OSU a 99% chance to land him.
Position: Offensive Tackle
Class: 2027
Ranking: #5 Recruit in State of Ohio
Location: Cincinnati, Ohio pic.twitter.com/pa6GHdqU9q
Kurelic was not alone in his optimism for the Buckeyes to land Johnson, as Greg Smith of On3.com also submitted a prediction for Johnson to join Ohio State’s 2027 class.
Ohio State’s 2027 class is already shaping up to be another impressive haul, despite the class only having two members. However, the two commits in the Buckeyes’ class for next cycle are four-star athlete Jamier Brown and high-end four-star quarterback Brady Edmunds. Brown projects to be a wide receiver in college, and will likely be one of the top-rated recruits at his position if not the top.
Johnson has not yet announced a final group, let alone a leader in his recruitment, but Tennessee, Penn State, Clemson and Notre Dame seem to be the biggest competition for the Buckeyes. The blue-chip OT will likely schedule visits with the above-mentioned programs during the upcoming season, and with the way recruiting is nowadays, schools will likely add their names to that list or fall off.
Johnson is the No. 22 OT in the 247Sports Composite Rankings and he is the No. 204 national prospect. He is also the No. 4 recruit out of Ohio.
Quick Hits
- Ohio State is also hard at work recruiting one of the nation’s top wide receiver recruits in the 2027 class. It is no secret Ohio State and Buckeyes offensive coordinator Brian Hartline are great at recruiting the wide-out position and the team is hoping to have found its next target in five-star WR Monshun Sales.
The blue-chip prospect would make for an excellent addition alongside the aforementioned Jamier Brown and Sales has reportedly scheduled a game day visit with the Buckeyes for this upcoming season.
