The Orioles got one last trade in under the wire before the trade deadline passed. This time, it’s one of their starting pitchers on the move, with MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reporting that Charlie Morton is being traded to the Tigers.
You could easily make the case that the bust-level performance in April from Morton is a large part of why the Orioles ended up being in a sell-off position in July. Mike Elias signed Morton - who at 41 years old is one day younger than me - after a solid-not-spectacular
2024 season. The price for $15 million over one year was eye-popping, all the moreso after Morton had a 10.36 ERA and six losses through his first six starts.
To Morton’s credit, he worked to get back to a good place in terms of his pitching and he’s nearly cut that unsightly ERA in half. Since rejoining the rotation about two months ago, Morton has fired off some quality starts and that was enough to draw some trade interest. He seemed like a nice, thoughtful guy who was genuinely disappointed in his early performance and I’m sure it is his hard-working attitude that helped him rebound.
As of this writing, the trade return for Morton has not been reported. I’m going to go eat dinner and then I’ll get back to you.
