The Mariners close up their series against the Athletics and their season series at Sutter Health Park in this final game before they return home for another AL West faceoff against the Rangers. With the Astros already winning today against the lowly Nationals, the Mariners need to win in order to avoid falling further behind in the AL West. More saliently, the Red Sox have also won big already, so the Mariners need a win to keep pace in the Wild Card race. That task tonight will fall to Bryan Woo,
who will face off against lefty Jeffrey Springs.

After a brief respite last night, the Mariners have to run out their righty-heavy lineup again today against the lefty Springs—although it’s not as righty as it could be, as Donovan Solano sits again for Naylor, while Canzone gets the start in right field.

News:
Today was a busy day for news. The big news is the Mariners traded minor-league pitcher Jeter Martinez to the Pirates for Caleb Ferguson, a lefty reliever who will provide some much-needed help for Gabe Speier. Ferguson has already reported to the club and is available tonight if needed. Jackson Kowar was optioned back to Tacoma in his place.
The other big news today is that Tyler Locklear is finally with the team, although not in the way we might hope, as it’s a corresponding move as Luke Raley hits the IL with back spasms. Disappointingly, the righty-hitting Locklear doesn’t make his season debut tonight, but maybe we’ll get to see him later. Locklear talked extensively with Shannon Drayer pregame where he talked about swing adjustments he made this June in lowering his hands and smoothing out his swing. This team badly needs right-handed hitting help, so hopefully Locklear can be a solid addition.
