Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...
Jalen Hurts says he’s focused on the new and not his Eagles Super Bowl ring: ‘The past is behind us’ - Inquirer In another photo, the 26-year-old quarterback sat on a sofa with Brandon Graham, who had a Super Bowl ring on each hand. A ringless Hurts simply pointed his left index finger to the Lombardi Trophy in his right hand. But did he ever wear the ring away from the cameras? Hurts didn’t answer the question directly after the Eagles’ first training
camp practice on Wednesday. “I’ve moved on,” Hurts said. “I’ve moved on to the new year. It’s as simple as that.”
Eagles focused on 2025, bristle at ‘defending champions’ label - ESPN+
The Philadelphia Eagles enter the 2025 campaign hyper-focused on turning the page from their Super Bowl run last season, to the point where terms such as “defending champs” and “repeat” are being left on the cutting-room floor. “We’re the 2024 world champs, that’s it. We’re not defending s---,” Eagles left tackle Jordan Mailata said after the team’s first training camp practice Wednesday. “I don’t like hearing we’re the defending champions. We’re not defending nothing. We just won the title, and now we’ve got to go win it again, prove it all over again. That’s the mentality this team is going to have. We’re not here to prove anything to anyone else but ourselves and we know the mission. We’re mission-focused.”
Saquon Barkley turns page on Super Bowl season as Eagles start camp - NJ.com
“How do you mentally turn the page? It’s kind of easy,” Barkley said on Wednesday morning at the NovaCare Complex. “That’s the nature of this game. That’s the nature of this business. What have you done for me lately? Whether you win a Super Bowl, have a great year, you’re All-Pro, what you did the year prior has nothing to do with this year coming up.” Barkley acknowledged, “You have your moments” to cherish that level of success before moving on. One was the Super Bowl parade. Going from South Philadelphia all the way up to the Museum of Art, Barkley and his teammates were showered with praise (and champagne).
Eagles Training Camp Practice Notes: Cooper DeJean plays safety, Jihaad Campbell ahead of schedule, and much more - BGN
JIHAAD CAMPBELL UPDATE: The Eagles’ 2025 first-round pick was listed as limited but he didn’t seem to miss many reps, if any. It’s possible he wouldn’t have been practicing to the same extent if the team was in pads. We’ll see how that goes once those come on. Still, good to see him out there after Vic Fangio previously said he wouldn’t be able to practice until August. Campbell lined up at second-team linebacker next to fellow rookie Smael Mondon Jr. in team drills. He broke up a Tanner McKee pass meant for Danny Gray at one point.
50 NFL names that will define the league in 2025 - SB Nation
Jalen Hurts. The Eagles quarterback is coming off his second Super Bowl appearance and his first title. But with the roster in Philadelphia reshaped after this offseason, can Hurts lead this group back to the title game?
Training Camp 2025 – Day 1 - Iggles Blitz
Tyler Steen lost his job last year to Mekhi Becton, who played well. Steen has shown good potential when he’s played. He’s got to be more consistent and a big part of that is playing with more confidence. Matt Pryor was the backup RG. I think Pryor will push Steen for the job. Pryor is bigger and stronger. And more experienced. I’m sure the coaches would love Steen to win the job so he could be a long term answer. Drew Kendall was the backup center. Brett Toth had that role in the spring. The Eagles drafted Kendall in the hopes that he would give them a good backup center for the next few years. I was interested to see rookie Myles Hinton got snaps at LT. He played on the right side in the spring. The Eagles have Darian Kinnard as the backup RT. LT is open. Veteran Kendall Lamm was the backup in the spring and first practice, but I’m sure the team would love to see enough from Hinton to have him win that job.
Howie Roseman opens up on avoiding the mistakes he made after 2017 Super Bowl - NBCSP
“I think when I look back at that moment (after the 2017 season), some of of the lessons - and there were a lot of lessons and we’ve talked about it over the course of the year - is that as much as you love the players, the staff, we’ve got to keep getting better. “There are teams that are improving throughout the offseason that we’ve got to keep up with, and we’ve got to do whatever it takes to put our best team forward, our best foot forward.” According to Spotrac’s team age database, those 2017 Eagles had the 7th-oldest roster in the NFL with a 26.5 average age and a lot of older veterans who enjoyed one last big season and then just didn’t have much left a year later. By 2018, despite a terrific draft class that included Dallas Goedert, Josh Sweat and Jordan Mailata, they averaged 26.9 years old. Conversely, the 2024 Eagles were the 4th-youngest team in the league at 25.7 and they’re currently 3rd-youngest, still at 25.7. You don’t want to cut ties with guys like Josh Sweat, Darius Slay, Milton Williams, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Kenny Gainwell, Mekhi Becton, Fred Johnson and Isaiah Rodgers. But after watching the Eagles decline every year from 2017 through 2020, Roseman knew better than anyone that you can’t let emotions affect your decision making.
Spadaro: Eagles know on Day 1 they have to ‘prove it all over again’ - PE.com
If you haven’t worked to improve on every part of your game, you’re going to be bypassed. That’s just how it works in the NFL. “Nobody rests on what they did in the past, or if they do, it’s going to hurt them,” Baun said. “For me, last year was great. It was a chance to show the kind of player I can be. But I know there are weaknesses in my game and there are things I can work on. That’s what I have been focused on. The entire experience of last season was just awesome, but I’m also aware that I can have a lot of growth in me and that is my purpose now. Get better every day. Nothing changes with that. This is a new season and a new team and we have a lot to prove. I have a lot to prove. That’s all I’m thinking about now. That’s all this team is thinking about: How can we get better and win games?”
Philadelphia-area businesses gearing up for another Eagles season - 6ABC
The start of football is getting closer as the Eagles had their first workout on Wednesday. Fans and businesses across the area are gearing up for what will be an exciting season. “Transitioning everything from red to green, it’s a really exciting time. I can’t wait to get the fall weather back and tailgating,” explained Mallory Minor, the owner of Minor Details in Manayunk.
Lane Johnson calls NFLPA issues a “shit show” - PFT
Earlier today, we used the term “shitshow” when discussing the tenure of former NFL Players Association executive director Lloyd Howell. Eagles tackle Lane Johnson was willing to apply the term more broadly. Via Mark Maske of the Washington Post, here’s what Johnson told reporters on Wednesday regarding the issues the union currently faces: “It’s a shit show, I guess. I mean, it’s been that way. People have known that. I’ve known that. So hopefully it gets better. I think it will.”
Browns claim DE K.J. Henry - Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns have claimed DE K.J. Henry via waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles. [BLG Note: The Eagles waived Henry to make room to sign former Browns edge rusher Ogbo Okoronkwo.]
How Good Were the Commanders’ Edge Defenders at Stopping the Run and Pressuring the Passer in 2024? - Hogs Haven
The Commanders had a major weakness in run defense on the right edge last season, and were particularly strong at defending runs on the left edge. The right end was predominantly defended by Clelin Ferrell and Dante Fowler, supported by other rotational players. Ferrell was a weak run stopper, as he has been for the past four years. In contrast, Fowler posted league-average Run Stop Rate figures for his position. He also split time on the left end where run defense was a strength. It appears that Clelin Ferrell was the weak link in the Commanders’ run defense in 2024, and is the man to beat as the Commanders look to improve on defense in 2025.
Cowboys 2025 camp: George Pickens has injury scare, DaRon Bland absent - Blogging The Boys
All reports since this have been good, with Pickens working with training staff and showing no sign of serious injury. We’ll see if he’s back to his usual workload tomorrow or if the team takes it easy with Pickens on Day 3.
Brian Daboll again says Russell Wilson will start season as New York Giants quarterback - Big Blue View
As many times as he had to confirm it during the spring, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll confirmed again on Wednesday that there will be no controversy over or competition for the team’s Week 1 starting quarterback job. “Russ is our starter,” Daboll said before the first practice of training camp, once again indicating that rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart is not competing to unseat Russell Wilson as the season-opening starter. Daboll did leave the door open for Dart, selected 25th in the draft by the Giants after a trade up from No. 34 with the Houston Texans, to win the No. 2 job. In addition to Wilson and Dart, the Giants also signed veteran quarterback Jameis Winston this offseason and still have Tommy DeVito on the 90-man roster.
What’s Really Going on in the NFLPA, and Where Does the Union Go From Here? - The Ringer
The NFL Players Association is in a state of chaos. In the past week, the union’s executive director, Lloyd Howell Jr., and chief strategy officer, J.C. Tretter, each resigned, leaving a massive leadership void atop the NFLPA on the eve of the preseason. The resignations came after a series of podcasts and news stories—first from journalist Pablo Torre and Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, and later from ESPN—exposed secretive agreements between the union and the NFL, Howell’s conflicts of interest while serving as the union’s leader, and overall dysfunction behind the scenes of the NFLPA. As of Wednesday morning, no interim director had been named, and it is unlikely a vote will happen by the end of the week. So while the union’s executive committee figures out who it wants as its temporary leader—and also determines what the process will be for choosing the permanent director who will lead the NFLPA into negotiations on the next collective bargaining agreement—let’s look back at how the union ended up in this mess. Here’s what you need to know.
