Barcelona midfielder Gavi admits he would love to captain the side after being handed the armband against FC Seoul.
The Spain star shone in Thursday’s friendly, scoring and leading the side to a 7-3 victory in South Korea.
Speaking after the match, Gavi said that wearing the captain’s armband for Barcelona is a source of inspiration and pride.
“I’ve always dreamed of wearing the Barcelona armband. It’s a source of pride for me, and I feel incredibly motivated every time I wear it,” he told AS.
“It inspires
ADme even more. If I’m not one of the captains this season, that’s normal. Even though I’ve been with the first team for many years, I’m young and still have to learn from the veterans. It will come when it’s time.”
Gavi also spoke about the coming season, admitting competition for places in midfield is tough and that starts will have to be earned.
“We have some of the best midfields in the world. I can play in several positions, and I think that says a lot about me. I’m a very complete player,” he explained.
“The competition is very tough, and there are some very good players. The manager will decide, but it’s clear that it will be difficult to be a starter because the level is high.”
The 20-year-old also went on to speak about which position he prefers to play in midfield for Barcelona under Hansi Flick.
“In this setup, I prefer to play more at point guard because I touch the ball more and feel more involved, which is important to me,” he added.
“I really love playing both positions at point guard or center.”
Gavi is heading into the new season in good shape and will be hoping to be a key player for Flick after putting his ACL nightmare behind him last season.
