With NFL training camps opening up across the NFL, many veteran free agents are finding new teams across the league. Among those is former Seattle Seahawks safety, Jamal Adams.
It was announced on Tuesday that Adams is signing with the Las Vegas Raiders, reuniting with former Seahawks head coach, Pete Carroll.
Jamal Adams was a 2017 first round pick by the New York Jets out of LSU. He shined quickly with the Jets, earning two pro bowls (2018 and 2019) and a first-team All-Pro (2019) before being traded
to the Seahawks in a blockbuster deal. Adams (and a 2022 fourth round pick, later becoming safety, Coby Bryant) was shipped to Seattle in exchange for a 2021 first- and third- round pick, a 2022 first-round pick, and safety, Bradley McDougald.
Adams quickly shined in Seattle in 2020. Adams earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in his first Seahawks season. Adams additionally broke the record for most sacks by a defensive back in 2020 with 9.5. (The record breaking sack was actually number 8.5, which Adams had against his former teammate, and current Seahawks starting quarterback, Sam Darnold.)
Adams’ success led to him signing a four-year extension in Seattle in 2021. However, the rest of Adams’ time in Seattle would go on to be plagued by injuries. In Week 13, Adams tore his labrum, ending his 2021 season. The next season, Adams tore his quad on opening night and ended his 2022 season. Adams was healthy enough to play in nine games in 2023 but did not look to be his same self after two back-to-back injury-plagued seasons, and didn’t finish the year out.
Seattle released Adams and Quandre Diggs (who’s still a free agent as of this writing) in March 2024. This unceremonious end to Adams’ career in Seattle prompted many to again question Seattle’s large trade for him back in 2020. Adams was able to find a few other NFL teams in 2024, signing on for short stints in the 2024 season with the Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions.
Now Adams gets the opportunity to rejoin with former coach, Pete Carroll in Las Vegas. Adams can now join the long list of former Pete Carroll players who’ve reunited with the beloved coach. Though Adams is far from a lock to make the 53-man roster in Las Vegas, he does have a legitimate shot to make the team, if not start. The current projected starters at safety for the Raiders are Jeremy Chinn and Isaiah Pola-Mao. On top of that, the only safeties who were brought to Las Vegas by the current Carroll/John Spytek regime were Chinn, Lonnie Johnson Jr., and now Adams.
The Raiders will play the Seahawks in the preseason opener at Lumen Field on Thursday, August 7.
