KELLY: Minkah Fitzpatrick hires agent Drew Rosenhaus, eyes long-term deal with Dolphins

WHAT'S THE STORY?

When the Miami Dolphins traded star cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a swap of late-round draft picks, I’ll admit it, I was surprised.

After all, Ramsey did not want to be in Miami. That was very clear based on Head Coach Mike McDaniel’s comments all offseason long and everything we heard leading up to the June 1st deadline.

So when trade rumors initially started, in my opinion, a late-round pick was the best General Manager Chris Grier and the Dolphins

could fetch in return for Ramsey. Maybe, just maybe, a player like Hunter Long on top of that, but you get the point — I didn’t expect much.

Welp, I was wrong — and I’m more than happy to be so!

All in all, the Dolphins got a player who would help improve their secondary — while filling an area of need — and the Steelers got what they believed to be the missing piece to their defense. Additionally, they gave Ramsey a contract extension, making the player happy in the process.

It’s now, apparently, Miami’s turn to make their player happy.

According to the Miami Herald’s Omar Kelly, Fitzpatrick has hired superagent Drew Rosenhaus — the same agent as defensive tackle Zach Sieler and several other high-priced players — to assure him a new long-term deal with the Miami.

Kelly points out that Fitzpatrick is out of guaranteed money, while set to make $15.5 million this upcoming season. He will earn $17.6M in 2026, but again, with no guaranteed money, it seems like the plan may have been to push for a new deal all along.

This has led some to speculate whether Minkah ‘could’ sit out later on if the situation doesn’t resolve quickly. No one but Minkah can say for sure, but it would be a massive setback for a Dolphins defense and their starting safety — who has just started to learn the playbook and get acclimated with his teammates.

That said, for Fitzpatrick, a new deal was always in the cards.

After signing a 4-year, $72.98 million extension with the Steelers back on June 15, 2022, Fitzpatrick has two years left on his Steelers’ extension worth $33.1 million. But at 29 years old with no guaranteed money left, this could be the last time he is able to secure the #bag, so bringing in Rosenhaus is the NFL way.

If you’re the Dolphins, you would think a long-term deal was the plan all along, but it is far from a no-brainer given their current situation. The team let former second-round pick Jevon Holland walk in free agency after a disappointing year and a half. And they seemed set to rely on two unproven veterans at safety, and then the Heavens opened and Minkah Fitzpatrick ascended from the sky. Are they ready to open up the checkbooks and right the wrongs of the past?

It won’t be cheap.

But when you factor in what the team was paying Jalen Ramsey and continues to pay some of their previous secondary blunders, locking Minkah Fitzpatrick up long-term to be the leader of the secondary could be the first step in fixing the ‘culture’, so many past and present players continue to harp on.

What are your thoughts on Minkah Fitzpatrick signing Drew Rosenhaus to land him another payday? Do you think this issue will resolve itself this offseason, or should we keep an eye on it in 2026? Would you give Fitzpatrick a long-term deal? Let us know in the comments section below!
