Michigan’s top overall target in the 2026 recruiting class — five-star running back Savion Hiter — is getting closer and closer to making a decision.

The No. 15 overall prospect and No. 1 running back in the country has announced he will be making his commitment on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

Hiter is down to four schools — Michigan, Tennessee, Georgia and Ohio State. He officially visited all four schools in June, with the Volunteers being his last stop. Tennessee also received an unofficial visit in the spring, so Josh Heupel and the Volunteers have a bit of momentum in that regarding heading into Hiter’s decision.

But that doesn’t mean Michigan is out of it. In fact, the Wolverines may still lead for the 5-foot-11.5, 200-pounder from Mineral, Virginia. Tony Alford has played a crucial role in this recruitment, and has actually been going after Hiter since he was the running backs coach in Columbus. That longstanding bond has elevated Michigan to the top tier of his top list, and may even have it at the top.

Following the official visit to Ann Arbor, Hiter’s advisor, Adam McCann, spoke about how things went with The Wolverine’s EJ Holland ($).

“Even before this visit, I saw Savion as a fit at Michigan,” McCann said. “Just the way Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall interact with him is great. I know how Savion interacts with people, and he’s comfortable. He’s a perfect fit on and off the field. He fits their Michigan Man puzzle. I think he screams everything they want out of a kid and family.”

No matter where he goes, Hiter will likely see the field early in his college career. He would be the top prospect at the running back position to commit to Michigan since Derrick Green in the 2013 class (No. 27 overall, No. 4 running back). As a junior in 2024, Hiter was named a MaxPreps Junior All-American, rushing for 1,698 yards and 26 touchdowns, along with another 199 receiving yards. He is a special, special talent.
