The many sweeps at Dodger Stadium

WHAT'S THE STORY?

Exactly half of the completed three-game series at Dodger Stadium this season have ended in sweeps. The Dodgers on Sunday are trying to avoid the business end of a second such series in Los Angeles.

Prior to this weekend against the Brewers, 14 three-game series were played in Los Angeles, with seven of them ending in sweeps. Most of the times this has gone in the Dodgers’ favor, dispatching of the Tigers, Braves, Rockies, Marlins, and White Sox while at home this season. They also were swept by the Angels

and Astros, and now a non-American-League-West team is threatening to join the party.

By comparison, in the 22 three-game series last season at Dodger Stadium, only six ended in sweeps.

The Dodgers were already swept by the Brewers within the last two weeks, having succumbed in all three games in Milwaukee from July 7-9. The Dodgers only scored four total runs during that series, so their seven-run outburst on Saturday night, even in a loss, offers a glimmer of hope that at least some of the many underperforming regulars might at least get within shouting distance of being back on track.

If the Dodgers don’t win Sunday, they will have lost all six regular season games to the Brewers this season, their first goose egg in a season series of at least two series since going 0-7 against the Cardinals in 2006.

The Dodgers haven’t been swept twice during the regular season by the same team since 2017, when the Diamondbacks beat them three in a row twice in a nine-day span, first in Arizona and then in Los Angeles.

That was a particularly odious stretch for the Dodgers, with 16 losses in 17 games. The current malaise has them at 2-9 over their last 11 games entering Sunday.
