It’s MLB Trade Deadline Day. Not only will the Yankees play a matinee with the Rays today, but there will be loads of action off the field. Teams will no longer be able to make trades after 6 p.m. EST this evening, which means that all day, the rumors and transactions are sure to fly fast and furious.

As the day progresses, we’ll keep this tracker updated with the most pertinent rumors and the biggest deals that come to fruition. The Yankees have already made a host of trades, and hopefully, they’ll

come out of today with a roster that looks capable of returning to the World Series.

Rumors of the Day (July 31)

  • 1:00 PM EST: There’s more buzz linking the Yankees to Sandy Alcantara, with Morosi reporting the Yankees are still discussing him, while adding that the Yankees and Marlins have also talked Edward Cabrera. The mention of Cabrera is interesting, as the hard-throwing 27-year-old has three arbitration years remaining after 2025, and thus would require a hefty prospect package in all likelihood. Morosi notes that Spencer Jones’ name has come up in talks.
  • 1:00 PM EST: The Twins have been active in selling off pieces, and Jon Morosi reports that talks surrounding Harrison Bader have “intensified”. The Yankees were rumored to be looking at reunion with Bader, though that’s off the table now with Austin Slater in the mix.
  • 12:35 PM EST: We’ve got another deal, Ken Rosenthal reporting that reliever Kyle Finnegan is going from the Nationals to the Tigers. A hard-thrower, the right-hander has always seemed to not quite live up to his potential as a back-end reliever, with a 3.66 ERA for his career and and a 4.38 mark to his name for 2025. The Yankees didn’t seem linked to Finnegan, but that is one fewer option for them to consider on the relief market now.
  • 12:20 PM EST: Though there’s a lot of focus on the pitching market right now, and that’s certainly where the Yankees are actively looking, there’s still some action to come on the market for hitters. Heyman notes that the Orioles have been exploring deals for Ramón Laureano, though Baltimore could hold on to him, as they have a team option for Laureano in 2026. Heyman also reported that the Mets are in outfielders, Cedric Mullins of the Oriole and Luis Robert Jr. of the White Sox on the table.
  • 12:00 PM EST: Jon Heyman and Mark Feinsand have noted that the Yankees are interested in 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcántara, who has had a rough first full year back from Tommy John surgery with the Marlins but still has his fair share of supporters. As cited earlier today, the Astros are also in on Sandy, as are the Cubs and Red Sox.
  • 11:35 AM EST: It should come as no surprise, but Bryan Hoch reports that the Yankees are viewing the imminent returns of Luis Gil, Ryan Yarbrough, Mark Leiter Jr., and Fernando Cruz as “big deals for us”. Hoch adds that the Yankees have been hesitant to pay the prices currently demanded on the relief market.
  • 11:15 AM EST: Bob Nightengale also reports that the Yankees and Blue Jays are in touch with the Padres regarding reliever Robert Suárez, who could be viewed as more expendable for San Diego with Mason Miller now in the fold. That would set up a high-leverage negotiating process, with the Yankees and Jays both possibly highly motivated to add a top relief arm and deny one from their direct rival.
  • 11:15 AM EST: There could be major fallout from the Miller trade, even beyond the particulars of the massive deal itself, with Nightengale suggesting that the Padres may be more inclined to move starter Dylan Cease now.
  • 11:00 AM EST: And just like that, we have a morning blockbuster. Jeff Passan reports that the Padres have agreed on a trade that will send Mason Miller and J.P. Sears from Sacramento to San Diego. First reports are that infielder Leodalis De Vries, one of the very best prospects in baseball, and three pitchers are going back to the A’s. This is the kind of shocking deal from AJ Preller and the Padres that I suppose we shouldn’t be shocked by at this point.
  • 10:30 AM EST: Heyman adds that Twins reliever Griffin Jax is also on the Yankees’ radar, though he could cost a pretty penny in prospects, with team control running through the 2027 season. That said, Jax has had an odd 2025 campaign, with a 2.00 FIP belied by a 4.50 ERA. Perhaps the Yankees could find a way to bring Jax in without sacrificing their top prospects.
  • 10:10 AM EST: Another trade: Chris McCosky of the Detroit News reports the Tigers are getting reliever Paul Sewald from the Guardians. The 35-year-old right-hander has dealt with injuries this year and has a 4.70 ERA in 15.1 innings, but Detroit is betting on the veteran returning to form down the stretch, with Jon Morosi reporting Sewald is expected to come off the IL in September.
  • 10:00 AM EST: Heyman reports the Yankees are among the teams looking at Pirates reliever David Bednar. This is no surprise, with relief pitching the team’s top priority on deadline day, and with Bednar one of the best relievers available, in possession of a 2.37 ERA and still with a year of arbitration left. However, Andy Martino notes that the Yankees’ pursuit of a top reliever has been dogged by their refusal to give up young bats Jasson Dominguez and Ben Rice, or top prospects Spencer Jones, Cam Schlittler, and George Lombard Jr. Will Brian Cashman relent and include one of those players, or will he find a way to add impact arms without touching the team’s most prized young talent?
  • 9:45 AM EST: The first big trade of the morning: Shane Bieber is headed to Toronto. Jon Morosi reports the Blue Jays are sending pitching prospect Khal Steven to the Guardians. The former Cleveland ace has been working his way back from Tommy John surgery last year, and after re-signing with the Guardians in free agency, he was on the verge of coming back. Instead, the 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner will be wearing a Blue Jays uniform.
  • 9:45 AM EST: Late last night, A’s manager Mark Kotsay told reporters that reliever Mason Miller was unavailable tonight, and that he’s not injured. The A’s might not be in a rush to trade the 26-year-old, who can’t be a free agent until 2030, but putting him on the market would sure things up today.
  • 9:45 AM EST: J.C. Escarra has been the subject of trade rumors, and after having been optioned to Triple-A, Francys Romero reports the Twins and Padres are interested in his services. Could the Yankees look to send Escarra to either club in exchange for pitching help?
  • 9:45 AM EST: The Astros have serious interest in Sandy Alcántara, with Nightengale reporting that Houston’s pursuit of Dylan Cease has cooled.
  • Also, consider this news from last night, but one popular trade target who’s probably not going to move at this point is Pirates righty Mitch Keller. Ken Rosenthal’s reporting indicates that the Bucs want to hold on to him.
