According to Rivals, the four-star is ranked as the No. 30 overall recruit, No. 4 player at his position, and No. 1 from the state of Mississippi. Gonzaga assistant coach R-Jay Barsh has been handling his recruitment while Funches has been playing with Team Sipp United on the NXT Pro Circuit with Puma this summer.
He led Germantown to a Mississippi high school state championship in his junior campaign, the first in program history. In the 69-52 victory over Madison Central, Funches had 16 points.
Funches spoke with The Slipper Still Fits about what he’s looking for in a college, and his answer revolved completely around his development as a big man.
“He was talking about my development. Mainly development. It was something along the lines of like it’s not about what you do, but it’s about how you do it... They always go 110 percent.” - Sam Funches via The Slipper Still Fits
He has already taken official visits with the Kansas Jayhawks, Ole Miss Rebels, and California Golden Bears. Funches has scheduled additional trips with Kansas State from August 29th-31st, Mississippi State from September 26th-28th, and LSU from October 10th-12th.
