Jersey Swap: Aitana Bonmatí

Who else? The FC Barcelona star has had a difficult month but was the hero tonight. She improved as the game wore on, pulling the strings for Spain in the midfield while Germany did a good job of corralling the forward line. In a game that yearned for just that little bit of magic dust from someone, anyone, she delivered with a crisp turn and laser finish. Match-winner.

getting on the ball a lot in different areas of the pitch and being tidy in the little possession Germany had. She embodied the fierce spirit of the stingy German defense.

Fußballgott: Elisa Senß

Somehow, Elisa Senß has still managed not to get booked in this tournament. Physical in the challenge and key to Germany’s defensive efforts, Senß also supplied a number of nice balls forward to get the threat quickly flowing the other way. She has been a warrior for her team throughout.

Der Bomber: Jule Brand

Germany’s most dangerous player on the day and probably of the tournament. Brand was at the heart of many of Germany’s most dangerous forays forward, though the stats and the final scoreline won’t reflect it. Out on the wing or driving inside through the midfield...Brand kept Spain on their toes.

Meisterin of the Match: Ann-Katrin Berger

It had to be. The Gotham FC stalwart gave it her all yet again, and it was almost enough to carry Germany through to penalties. Berger’s phenomenal shot-stopping was key to Germany being level at the half, and she would finish the match with eight saves of Spain’s nine shots on target. The one big mistake — Berger expecting a cross and waving to her defenders as Bonmatí fired quickly past her at the near post — was unfortunately the dagger. Berger gave us a beautiful tournament, and had a sweet moment after the game in which she swapped jerseys with NWSL club teammate Esther González. Good show, AKB. Standing O.
