Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of South Korean winger Seung-soo Park from K League 2 side Suwon Bluewings. The 18-year-old becomes the club’s latest youth acquisition and will join the Magpies’ under-21 squad.
Park made 28 senior appearances for Suwon, contributing one goal and three assists. In June, he became the youngest goalscorer in South Korean professional football history with a goal against Ansan Greeners FC.
“It’s a huge honour to join Newcastle United,” Park said. “It’s a big
step for me and I feel incredibly thankful for the faith the club have shown in me. I’m excited to develop here, learn from the coaches, and give everything to become the best player I can be.”
Park has also been capped five times for South Korea’s U20 team, scoring once since his debut in February.
Academy Director Steve Harper said the signing underlined Newcastle’s international scouting ambition.
“Park is an exciting young talent with real potential,” Harper said. “He’s already shown maturity beyond his years in a competitive environment and we’re delighted to welcome him to the club.”
Park joins fellow youth arrivals Antonio Cordero and soon-to-be-eligible Vakhtang Salia, while Anthony Elanga remains the only first-team addition so far this summer in another rather disappointing transfer window at Tyneside.
Newcastle are set to tour South Korea during the next few days, with Park’s arrival timed ahead of matches in his home country against a K League all-star side and Tottenham Hotspur, where he’s expected to log some minutes of playing time.
