The Texas Rangers have placed reliever Jacob Webb on the 10 day injured list with back spasms, the team announced today. To take his place on the active roster, the Rangers have recalled reliever Luis Curvelo.

Webb has been okay this season for the Rangers as a middle reliever, putting up a 3.75 ERA in 48 innings over 42 games with a 4.57 FIP, though he’s given up homers in three of his last four appearances. Back spasms are not usually something that results in a lengthy i.l. stint, so at first glance,

one would guess he should be back back mid-August.

Taking his place is a 24 year old righthander who was a minor league free agent this past offseason, having spent his entire career up to that point with the Seattle Mariners. The Rangers liked him enough to sign him to a major league deal. This will be his first time in the majors. He has a 3.26 ERA in 34 games over 38.2 IP for Round Rock, with 40 Ks against 18 walks.

Curvelo’s numbers are a bit skewed by a couple of bad outings against Tacoma in late June, when, over a two game stretch, he allowed eight runs in 2.1 IP. In 25 games prior to that he had a 1.69 ERA, and he has allowed just one run in seven appearances covering 9.2 IP since then.
