CMLL announces MJF title match, Anniversario lucha de apuesta, & Grand Prix teams with AEW talent

WHAT'S THE STORY?

It was a busy evening of news on CMLL Informa. MJF has a date for his title shot, a second lucha de apuesta was added to the 92nd Anniversary show, and the Grand Prix teams were revealed with talent from AEW, NJPW, MLW, and RevPro.

MJF wants the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship held by Averno. It’s not so much about winning the title than it is taking a prize desired by Mistico. CMLL announced the date for MJF to challenge Averno on August 1 in Arena Mexico.

hair between El Felino and Rey Bucanero for the 92nd Anniversary event on September 19. Now, they added a second lucha de apuesta. Rivals will be paired for a three-way tag team contest. The winners will advance to a one-on-one duel for either hair versus hair or mask versus mask, depending on the circumstances. The teams will be Averno & Ultimo Guerrero (hair) versus Esfinge & El Valiente (mask) versus El Dragon Rojo Jr. & El Barbaro Cavernario (hair).

My personal favorite CMLL event of the year is the Grand Prix with international talent. The format is 10 versus 10 torneo cibernetico elimination style with teams of Mexico against the World. Imagine the classic Survivor Series matches but with the emotional tug of patriotism. The Mexican fans go nuts rooting for their team, and it creates a rowdy atmosphere in Arena Mexico.

CMLL revealed the teams for the Grand Prix event on August 29. Team Mexico includes:

  • Mistico
  • Volador Jr.
  • Atlantis Jr.
  • Mascara Dorada
  • Neon
  • Angel de Oro
  • Titan
  • Templario
  • Zandokan Jr.
  • Difunto

Members for the World team include:

  • “Speedball” Mike Bailey (AEW) - Canada
  • Rocky Romero (AEW) - USA
  • Lio Rush (AEW) - USA
  • Action Andretti (AEW) - USA
  • The Beast Mortos (AEW) - Mexico
  • Taiji Ishimori (NJPW) - Japan
  • TJP (NJPW Strong) - Philippines
  • Donovan Dijak (MLW) - USA
  • Michael Oku (RevPro) - UK
  • Robbie X (RevPro) - UK

About Mortos being on the World team, Julio Cesar Rivera explained that Beast is representing AEW rather than Mexico.
