Dodgers Week 22: Sweeping the Padres to stay in first place

WHAT'S THE STORY?

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers played to the extremes in the last week, but ordered their 3-3 week in the best way possible. First came the losses, embarrassingly so in a hellish sweep at the hands of the Angels in Anaheim. But then came redemption, sweeping their division rival Padres to reclaim the top spot in the National League West.

Sweeping San Diego gave the Dodgers an 8-2 record against their closest foe, which clinched the season series to earn a tiebreaker if needed six weeks from now.

still a lot of baseball left to play, but the weekend felt like a big series, finally seeing some results after roughly a month and a half of iffy baseball.

“It might have reinforced something to others outside our locker room,” manager Dave Roberts said. “But I think it’s something like, we’ve got to get going and not just talk about it. The last three days, we sort of performed and didn’t just talk about it.”

Batter of the week

Eight different Dodgers hit home runs last week, including two by Shohei Ohtani plus a triple. He also walked seven times for a .462 on-base percentage, and scored seven times, nearly a quarter of the team’s runs.

Pitcher of the week

Blake Snell got some help from Will Smith behind the plate early, but then settled down and got through six scoreless innings against the Padres on Saturday in the Dodgers’ most stress-free game of the week.

Miscellany

Grand Kennedys: Buddy Kennedy made his Dodgers debut on Sunday, playing third base. He is the 2,000th player in franchise history. Sixty years ago the 1,000th player in Dodgers history was John Kennedy.

Double draught: The Dodgers this week hit 10 home runs and had a triple, but somehow did not hit any doubles from Monday through Their six-game skid with no doubles was their longest since a six-game streak from July 26-August 1, 1995.

The 700 club: With his home run off Kenley Jansen on Tuesday in Anaheim, Shohei Ohtani surpassed 700 total bases since the start of the 2024 season. Ohtani is just the third Dodger to amass 700 total bases in a two-season span, along with Babe Herman (1929-30 and 1930-31) and Duke Snider (1953-54 and 1954-55). Ohtani ended his week with 295 total bases this season and 706 in 2024-25 combined. The Dodgers have 38 games remaining on the schedule for Ohtani to top Herman’s two-year club record of 764 total bases in 1929-30.

Transactions

Tuesday: Reliever Brock Stewart was placed on the injured list with shoulder inflammation, and Edgardo Henriquez was recalled from Triple-A.

Friday: Max Muncy was placed on the injured list with a strained oblique that’s expected to sideline the third baseman for several weeks. Infielder Buddy Kennedy was claimed off waivers from the Blue Jays and activated, and pitcher Julian Fernández was designated for assignment.
