WHAT'S THE STORY?

MLB: Milwaukee Brewers at Seattle Mariners

The Mariners can finish their toughest stretch of the year with a winning record.

With a win this afternoon, the Mariners would clinch a series victory over the Brewers — the winningest team in MLB. That would improve to 7-5 over their last four series:.

  • 0-3 against the Yankees, the team with the most fWAR in MLB
  • 3-0 against the Tigers, the team with the most wins in the AL
  • 2-1 against the Astros, the leader in the AL West
  • 1-1 and counting against the Brewers, tied for the best record in MLB

I wrote a few weeks ago about how this stretch was crucial in positioning the Mariners before the trade deadline, and they’ve secured at least a .500 record. They begin a six-series stretch against bad and middling teams Thursday in Anaheim. I will

continue to beat this drum until it stops being relevant: the Mariners are well positioned for a run at the division. They’d be in an even better spot with a win this afternoon.

Lineups

On the mound for the Mariners is Luis Castillo. In his last four outings, Castillo has averaged a little over six innings pitched with a 1.46 ERA and 1.92 FIP. Groundball specialist Quinn Priester will go for the Brewers. Priester has been hit or miss this year. He dominated the Dodgers with 10 strikeouts over six innings his last time out but struggled with walks and homers in prior outings.

Cal Raleigh is not in the starting lineup today, with Mitch Garver behind the plate and Jorge Polanco at DH. Other than that, this looks like a typical “the Mariners are facing a righty” lineup.
