For Liverpool to complete the signing of Alexander Isak that they’re seeking, two things probably need to happen. The first is that Newcastle, operating without a sporting director and having failed to land multiple targets this summer, really do need a replacement.

The second is that Liverpool likely need to find a club willing to meet their valuation for Darwin Nuñez. The former might be close following news of a formal Newcastle bid for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško. The latter might be about

to be solved by Saudi’s Al Hilal.

Reports over the past 24 hours have Al Hilal submitting a formal bid of their own for Nuñez, with local reports claiming talks are at an advanced stage and that Nuñez is the top choice for manager Simone Inzaghi after missing out on Victor Osimhen earlier in the summer.

Meanwhile, there are further claims that Nuñez and his representatives are currently engaged in discussions with Al Hilal to discuss the project and financial details. Nuñez was previously willing to join Al-Nassr, who bid in excess of £60M for the striker in January.

At the time, Liverpool rejected the bid given the Reds were in the midst of a title race with a relatively thin squad and no ready replacement lined up. A similar offer now, be it from Al Hilal or an interested club in Europe, would almost certainly see Liverpool agree a sale.

That sale, combined with Newcastle actually getting a striker signing across the line, could be what’s needed to kick the Alexander Isak deal into high gear, but there remain a lot of moving parts and it remains impossible to say for certain how all of them will work out.
