The Dodgers placed utility man Hyeseong Kim on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with left shoulder bursitis, something that has bothered him recently, visibly apparent during many of his swings. That was the move that made room on the active roster for Alex Freeland getting his first call-up to the majors, which was reported on Monday.

Kim has struggled mightily in July, hitting .193/.207/.211 with a 40.7-percent strikeout rate in 21 games, including 15 starts. Over his last five games, Kim struck

out in nine of his 13 plate appearances.

Even while dealing with shoulder trouble, Kim still started six of the Dodgers’ last seven games, because the position player depth has been tested of late, especially so while missing Max Muncy and Kiké Hernández on the injured list.

Tommy Edman missed Monday night’s game while dealing with a sore ankle, and very well could have been the corresponding roster move for Freeland, had things not improved on Tuesday.

Edman is starting at third base on Tuesday against Reds left-hander Nick Lodolo.

Freeland is the second consensus top-100 prospect position player to be called up by the Dodgers this season, along with catcher Dalton Rushing, who was drafted one round ahead of Freeland in 2022.

The switch-hitting Freeland, who hit .253/.377/.421 with 26 doubles, 12 home runs, 17 stolen bases, and a 108 wRC+ in Triple-A Oklahoma City, was ranked on Tuesday by FanGraphs as the 39th-best prospect in the sport.

With Freeland added, the Dodgers’ 40-man roster is full.
