No more preambles about how rough the Yankees have it. The Red Sox are breathing down their necks, but they also have a chance to force the Rays much closer to the “sell” side of the aisle with a couple big wins in this series. They’ll start behind the big right arm of Cam Schlittler, and hope he can find the zone.
We could stand to see a few more strikeouts from the rookie, making just his third start in the majors, but really the problem has been walks. Five of them in 10.1 innings means you’re
just handing out at-bats with men on, and even bad MLB teams will eventually make you pay for it. The Rays aren’t exactly the class of the AL East right now, but Junior Caminero, Yandy Díaz...these kind of guys can still hurt you if you give them chances.
Drew Rasmussen will go for Tampa, his sixth career appearance and fifth start against the Yankees. To say he has their number would be a bit of an understatement, with Drew’s 0.34 ERA the lowest mark he sports against any team, and he has struck out exactly one-third of all Yankees he’s ever faced.
The hitters drew a tough assignment, no pun intended, one made even tougher with the absence of Aaron Judge. Ben Rice draws the final remaining short straw, sitting in lieu of Paul Goldschmidt, while Ryan McMahon hits seventh and looks to build off a pretty good Sunday performance.
