Happy birthday, Kyron Drones. The Virginia Tech quarterback, along with head coach Brent Pry and three of his teammates, spent Thursday at the ACC Kickoff in Charlotte in preparation for the upcoming 2025 season.
Pry discussed several things, such as his record in one-score games, his new offensive and defensive coordinator and how he believes this 2025 team is both physically and mentally tougher.
For the most part, this was your typical media event where nothing of substance was said. But Drones
did say something revealing. He named his “top five” offensive linemen, indicating what VT’s revamped offensive line will look like in 2025.
“They’ve been doing a real good job,” Drones said, via Evan Watkins of 247Sports. “They’ve been doing extra workouts outside of the workouts we’ve been doing, just being in that extra meeting room with Coach Moore. I’m thankful that I got that line for me. I wouldn’t want any other O-line in the country. But my best five is Johnny, Layth, Kyle, Montavious, and Tommy.”
Here are the five players Drones is referring to here:
- Redshirt junior Johnny Garrett
- Redshirt sophomore Lyath Ghannam
- Redshirt freshman Kyle Altuner
- Redshirt senior Montavious Cunningham
- Redshirt senior Tomas Rimac
It’s a completely revamped unit from last year. First, there's a new coach. Pry fired Ron Crook after two disappointing years and landed former WVU offensive line coach Matt Moore. That alone is a massive improvement from a coaching and recruiting perspective. The Hokies lost several multi-year starters, Xavier Chaplin (Auburn), Braelin Moore (LSU), Kaden Moore and Parker Clements. Chaplin is the most difficult loss as he has first-round potential at offensive tackle. However, despite these losses, Tech’s offensive line could be much better than it was last year.
Considering how much Drones was hit last year, yes, some of it is due to his style of play; a revamped unit was needed.
The Hokies have almost zero expectations this year, which is quite different from 2024.
By the way, Thursday was, in fact, Drones’ birthday. Happy birthday, QB1.
