WHAT'S THE STORY?

ESPN | Kiley McDaniel & Jeff Passan: It’s trade deadline season, so let’s talk about the best guys available. Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez is the big fish of course, but there’s a fair amount of additional talent available. The big dark horse candidates come out of Boston, where if the Red Sox decide a soft retool focused around their young prospects is the best plan for 2025, folks like Alex Bregman might become available.

New York Daily News | Peter Sblendorio: Old-Timers’ Day is August

9th, with the Yankees celebrating the 25th anniversary of the 2000 World Series championship team. The traditional alumni baseball game will be played for the first time since 2019, but curiously, the MVP of that World Series — Derek Jeter — is not expected to be in attendance.

Defector | Richard Staff: There’s a phenomenon among some baseball players; the phantoms. These are guys added to major league rosters, heck, added to lineup cards, but never get into game action before being sent off the big league club. Former Yankee Ryan Bollinger joined this club in 2018. At least Moonlight Graham got some time in the outfield.

Bluebird Banter | Bryant Telfor: If you weren’t tired of reading my work by now, you can exhaust yourself over at our sister site. In preparation for this week’s big series with the Blue Jays, I gave some thoughts on the inertia of the Yankee front office, the problems with needing a little bit of everything at the deadline, and a shout-out to Peak Dellin Betances.

New York Post | Mitch Fink: In a funny little bit of roster juggling, Rico Garcia was claimed off waivers by the Mets Monday, the same team that let him go to the Yankees last week. Garcia appeared in just one, lousy, game for the Yankees, and he’ll look to improve on a pretty bad year down in Queens.
