Seth Lugo talks about wanting to stay in Kansas City.

“After being here for a year and a half, me and my family just fell in love with the city,” Lugo said, with his wife, Amanda, sitting in the front row of the press conference and the two Lugo boys, 5-year-old James and 3-year-old Myles, trying their very best to remain attentive for their dad’s big day.

Lugo continued: “Kansas City is such a pretty place, and it’s treated us so well. As far as on the field, me and the other pitchers and the entire

pitching department, we really feel like we’re onto something really special. From the coaching staff, but more specifically, the pitching department — it’s something that we’re building. And it’s something I want to be a part of.”

Craig Brown likes the deal.

I implore you not to listen to the outside prognosticators who will dump on the Royals for extending Lugo. This is a fair deal that is probably a little under market value, had Lugo stayed healthy for the rest of this season and become a free agent. Lugo is comfortable in Kansas City. The Royals are comfortable with Lugo. This is not without risk (show me a starting pitcher signing that’s without risk), but this is a very good contract for both the team and player.

One way to look at it is that the Royals gave Lugo the qualifying offer, and he accepted. Then, there’s just one more year tacked on to that. Honestly, it feels like the Royals are protected for that third year.

Anne Rogers writes about Kris Bubic missing the rest of the year with injury.

Regarding whether Bubic should have taken further precautions in the earlier part of the season, he said he “doesn’t regret anything of how I handled it earlier in the year.”

“I was bouncing back fine,” Bubic said. “Velo, command, all that stuff was stable and the results were good and the process was good. There were really no red flags in my mind. There were no red flags from anybody coming to me about anything. Not until essentially this last week, between Miami and the other day. That was when, ‘OK, you see the velo drop, you see the command all over the place.’ Those are some pretty obvious red flags.

Jaylon Thompson writes about what the Royals will do next.

“It’s no fun to hear that for us or for him, for sure, but this is a baseball season and you have to anticipate things happening,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said of the Bubic news. “And our guys are going to roll with it.

“Someone else is going to get an opportunity to pitch those innings and figure out what we have. We talk about it all the time, we talk about knowing we are going to need depth, quality depth, and then the situation arises where you have to step up and do it.”

Salvy seems to be okay despite getting hit on the elbow with a pitch last night.

Michael Baumann at Fangraphs wraps up some recent trades, including the deal for Randal Grichuk.

The Royals continue to stand by, hanging around .500 while they see just how far the Tigers are capable of spiraling. As of Monday morning, Kansas City had a 12.6% chance of making the playoffs. That’s not a position from which I’d want to offload big-time prospects in order to get a rental, but neither is it a clear indication that it’s time to run up the white flag.

Trading minor league pitcher Andrew Hoffmann for Grichuk is kind of like the recent Adam Frazier deal, in that the Royals are exchanging minor league depth for a player they hope will bring competence to a position that’s currently a void. I like this deal more than the Frazier trade for two reasons: First, I think trading Hoffmann has less of a chance of coming back to bite Kansas City than dealing Cam Devanney does. Second, I think Grichuk, despite his pitiable overall numbers, will be more useful than Frazier.
