Spell, Von Brandt, and Taylor all rank inside the current Top 50 of Rivals’ 2027 national player rankings. While the 2026 class has not closed as smoothly as Penn State fans hoped for, the 2027 class is off to an excellent start.
Penn State’s 2025 Roster Meets Blue Chip Threshold
Since the advent of the College
Football Playoff in 2014, every national champion has had a blue-chip ratio (the percentage of team’s recruits that are four or five-star prospects) of at least 50%. The average for the CFP era is 71% for the national champion and 61% for all playoff participants. Penn State is one of 18 teams to meet the threshold in the 2025 season:

Penn State increased its ratio from 61% in 2024 to 68% in 2025, largely due to retaining the cornerstones of the 2022 class in addition to bringing in 19 four-star prospects from the 2025 class.
BONUS: Penn State Hockey Target Commits to Michigan State
After Gavin McKenna committed to Penn State hockey on July 8, there was speculation that Porter Martone might be the next to make the call for Hockey Valley. The No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and Philadelphia Flyers prospect has committed to Michigan State:

Penn State and Michigan State are the likely favorites to win the Big Ten championship and are currently the top two betting favorites to win the NCAA championship in 2026. The four regular season meetings between the two teams will be must-see TV.
