The Chargers will kickoff the 2025 NFL preseason with their bout against the Detroit Lions in this week’s Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. PT.
With two days until game day, Jim Harbaugh has officially made the call for quarterback Trey Lance to be the starter in their preseason opener. This does not mean that he’s necessarily leapfrogged Taylor Heinicke, however. As a highly-drafted player that has struggled mightily with injuries since being drafted third overall,
Lance needs as many snaps as he can get and it looks like Harbaugh is very much on board with giving him the lion’s share of the snaps over the next four weeks.
With no fourth quarterback on the roster, Heinicke will likely serve as the backup.
In three healthy seasons, Lance has thrown for 1,063 yards and five touchdowns. while holding a 2-3 record as a starter.
If the news of Lance starting is a negative event for you, maybe that news will be softened by the fact that exciting rookies Omarion Hamtpon, Tre’ Harris, and KeAndre Lambert-Smith will be playing alongside him.
Normally the preseason isn’t a ton of fun to watch because the level of play is just so far below what we normally watch on NFL Sundays, but the Chargers have more than a few rookies we can’t wait to seeing action. However, their performances will only be as good as Lance and his ability to get them the ball.
