Liverpool’s squad has suffered its first injury setback of the season, and of course it’s Joe Gomez, who was sent home from Hong Kong with what is being described as a minor achilles injury.

Gomez is no stranger to injuries throughout his lengthy Liverpool career, unfortunately. Indeed, our #12 played just 11 first team minutes in 2025 so far.

Gomez’s injury record is especially a concern after the outgoing of Jarell Quansah, leaving Liverpool with just 3 senior center backs. And now two.

Slot does not seem concerned.

“I’m looking to my left [at Virgil van Dijk], I don’t think we have a concern at centre-back!” Slot said in a press conference in Hong Kong.

“In terms of depth, Ryan showed today that he can play that position. He did it last season as well. But although we all know that we favour him as a central midfielder.

“Wata (Endo) can also play centre-back. Joe Gomez only has a minor injury. He’s been good for us last season as well. We have enough options left but it’s true that Jarell Quansah left and we haven’t replaced him.

“I also said I was really happy with the squad I had which we showed by not bringing in players last season and we won the league.”

Although Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi was heavily linked to replace Quansah, those links have cooled down in recent weeks while the Alexander Isak links have heated up.

This has lead to some questioning Liverpool’s transfer priorities, especially after watching AC Milan hang four on The Reds yesterday. Gomez’s injury will only deepen these concerns, especially without any resolution to Konate’s contract situation.

All of this said, there’s still a long way left to go in this transfer window, and the fact that Slot is so unbothered by depth in defense probably indicates that wheels are in motion behind the scenes.
