While it's not quite as predictable as the tides or the sun rising each morning, you knew it was only a matter of time before the rumor mill linked Federico Chiesa with Roma. After scoring 10 goals and providing six assists for Fiorentina in 2020, Chiesa made a big-money move to Juventus, essentially signing a five-year deal with the club in a package worth at least €50 million.
After a solid, if unspectacular, four-year run with the Old Lady of Italian Football, Chiesa transferred to Liverpool for
€12 million, signing a four-year deal with everyone's sister-in-law's favorite football club. However, with only six Premiership appearances to show for it, Chiesa's time in Merseyside has been an unmitigated disaster.
This brings us to the latest incarnation of the Chiesa-to-Roma rumor industry. According to Calciomercato and Radio, Radio, Roma and Liverpool are discussing a loan deal for the 27-year-old Genoa native, who was excluded from the Reds' pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Japan.
Chiesa never became the world-conquering hero that Juventus (and Liverpool) had envisioned. Still, he was pretty effective during his final season with Juve, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in 25 starts for the Old Lady during the 2023-2024 season, so the bloom isn't entirely off the rose.
Will anything come of this rumor? Probably not, but taking a gamble on Chiesa at his lowest point could pay handsome rewards if Gasperini can work his magic on the former Fiorentina wonderkid.
