Texas Rangers minor league pitcher Caden Scarborough was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for this past week. He is celebrating winning the award with a promotion, per Jeff Wilson, who is reporting that Scarborough is being promoted from low-A Hickory to high-A Hub City and will make his Hub City debut on Thursday.
Scarborough, a 20 year old righthander, was the Rangers’ fifth round draft pick in 2023. He made his professional debut in 2024 but only threw 10.1 innings between the Arizona
Complex League and low-A. In spring training this year, he was generating a lot of talk due to added velocity and overall improvement in his stuff.
Scarborough began the year at low-A Hickory, and the early results were mixed. He struck out 56 of 169 batters in 40.2 IP over his first 11 games, but walked 13 and allowed five home runs, putting up a 4.65 ERA. In eight games since then, however, Scarborough has allowed just four runs (three earned) in 34.1 IP over eight games, striking out 39 of 125 batters, walking just six and allowing a pair of home runs. In his most recent outing, he faced one over the minimum in five innings, striking out seven and walking one while not allowing a hit.
In addition to Scarborough, Round Rock pitcher Cory Abbott was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for last week. In his start for Round Rock, he threw 5.1 shutout innings, striking out three and allowing three hits and one walk. For the season, Abbott has a 6.79 ERA in 57 innings over 13 starts and three relief appearances.
