Mark Kirton, a former NHL player who played six seasons as a center, has died at the age of 67. Kirton was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in 2018. Despite the debilitating effects of the disease, Kirton became a prominent advocate for ALS research and was a board member of ALS Action Canada. In 2020, he helped unite the seven Canadian NHL franchises to support ALS research, culminating in the creation of the ALS Super Fund, which reached a milestone of $1 million in September 2024.
