Sri Lanka couldn’t complete the chase despite their opener Pathum Nissanka’s maiden T20I ton. In the final over of the game, Indiapacer Harishit Rana held his nerve and got Nissanka caught at the hands of Varun Chakaravarathy. Eventually, the scores were level after 40 overs of the match and the Super Over came into the picture.

Sri Lanka batted first in the Super Over and Arshdeep Singh gave an excellent start to India. The pacer dismissed Kusal Perera on the first ball and delivered the crucial breakthrough to the Men in Blue. The fourth ball of the over saw Arshdeep bowled a delivery to Dasun Shanaka, which went to the wicket-keeper Sanju Samson. The speedster appealed to the on-field umpire for the caught behind, who declared the Sri Lanka stalwart out. Amid that, Samson also displayed alacrity and hit the stumps at the striker's end when the 34-year-old was outside the crease.

Why Dasun Shanaka was given not out despite being outside the crease?

Dasun Shanaka took a review against caught behind decision from the on-field umpire and the replays showed that the ball didn’t touch the bat. Eventually, the on-field umpire had to reverse the decision as told by the third umpire and the Sri Lanka veteran was declared not out. With that, Samson’s successful run out of Dasun Shanaka also went in vain as the ball was declared dead when the caught behind got overturned, according to the MCC’s law number 20.1.

According to the rules of cricket, the delivery was declared dead as the bowler’s appeal led the on-field umpire to give a decision on the catch. Following the on-field umpire’s decision, the play ended there, and after that, the remainder of the play - dismissal of Dasun Shanaka - could be entertained. Had Arshdeep Singh not appealed for the caught behind, the Sri Lankan batter would’ve been declared run out.
