What's Happening?
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) GOES-19 satellite has captured an accidental image of the Moon crossing the Sun. The image was taken by the Compact Coronagraph-1 (CCOR-1), which is designed to observe the solar corona. The Moon appeared fully illuminated due to Earthshine, sunlight reflected from Earth onto the Moon's surface. This unexpected event occurred because of the satellite's geostationary orbit, which occasionally aligns with the Moon's path.
