What's Happening?
NASA astronaut Nichole Ayers captured a rare atmospheric phenomenon known as a gigantic jet from the International Space Station on July 3, 2025. Gigantic jets are powerful electrical discharges that extend from the top of thunderstorms into the upper atmosphere, creating an electrical bridge between the clouds and space. These events are typically observed by chance and are distinct from sprites, which are another type of transient luminous event occurring higher in the atmosphere. The Spritacular project, led by Dr. Burcu Kosar, aims to study these phenomena further.
