What's Happening?
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has awarded a $166 million design and engineering contract for the Interborough Express (IBX), a planned 14-mile light rail line in New York City. The contract was given to a joint venture between HDR, based in Omaha, Nebraska, and Jacobs, headquartered in Dallas. The IBX will connect Brooklyn and Queens, linking underserved communities to the subway, bus, and Long Island Rail Road systems. The project, proposed by New York Governor Kathy Hochul in 2022, aims to reduce travel times by 30 minutes in either direction. The IBX will feature 19 stations and connect to 17 different subway lines, utilizing an existing freight line right-of-way. Design work is set to begin this summer, focusing on communication and signal systems, vehicles, tracks, and civil engineering efforts.
