What's Happening?
The French air force has initiated the first operational deployment of its upgraded Dassault Aviation Mirage 2000D combat aircraft, now designated as the 2000D RMV, to Djibouti. This deployment is part of a security commitment to the region, involving two of the modernized jets. The upgraded aircraft, which entered service in April 2025, feature enhanced cockpit, navigation, and targeting capabilities. They are equipped with GBU-48 and GBU-50 laser-guided bombs, MBDA Mica IR short-range air-to-air missiles, and a 30mm cannon for air policing missions. The deployment includes three additional Mirage 2000-5F fighters, with the mission to defend Djiboutian territory, airspace, and territorial waters, as well as securing strategic supply routes and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
