Echols was nominated by President George H. W. Bush to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee in 1991, serving as Chief Judge from 1998 to 2005. He retired in 2010 but continued practicing law until 2019. Echols was also a founding member of Christ Presbyterian Church in Nashville, contributing significantly to his community.
