He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force and held significant roles in major firms such as A.T. Kearney, Arthur Andersen, and Watson Wyatt. Kelly was also deeply involved in community service, serving on the board of directors for several organizations, including Hinsdale Central High School Board, College of Dupage, and Hinsdale Village. He was known for his adventurous spirit, participating in sailboat races and golfing until the age of 90.
