What's Happening?
Dr. Alieu Kamara, the first and only neurosurgeon in Sierra Leone, is tasked with addressing the neurosurgical needs of the country's eight million residents. Since beginning his practice in January 2025, Kamara has been handling cases involving traumatic injuries, spinal paralyses, seizures, and brain tumors. His work is supported by Mission Brain, a California-based nonprofit, and other international partners who provide training and resources. Kamara's efforts have led to the first-ever spine surgery in Sierra Leone, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of establishing neurosurgical care in a resource-limited setting.
