The surgeries are part of a 'heart camp' aimed at addressing the severe shortage of cardiothoracic specialists and medical equipment in Zimbabwe. The country, which resumed open-heart surgeries in 2023 after a five-year hiatus due to economic challenges, has only five cardiothoracic surgeons. The surgeries are crucial as congenital heart disease is a common birth defect, affecting about one in every 100 children globally.
