Coral reefs along Western Australia's coast have suffered unprecedented bleaching due to the state's longest and most intense marine heatwave. Between August and May, elevated water temperatures caused significant heat stress, leading to coral expelling algae, a process known as bleaching. The Australian Institute of Marine Science reported that the 2024-25 season marked the most severe coral bleaching on record for Western Australian reefs. Areas like Rowley Shoals, north Kimberley, and Ningaloo, which had rarely bleached before, were severely impacted.
