Domestic Flight Extremes

This summer's aviation landscape in India reveals striking contrasts in flight durations. On the shortest end, Alliance Air operates two routes that are

identical in distance but differ in time: Diu-Keshod and Imphal-Silchar, both covering a mere 95 km. The Diu-Keshod journey is scheduled for 35 minutes, while Imphal-Silchar takes 55 minutes, both serviced by ATR 72-600 aircraft. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Air India dominates the longest domestic route with its Delhi-Port Blair service. This extensive journey spans 2,481 km and takes approximately three hours and forty minutes to complete. Air India utilizes a three-class A320neo aircraft, accommodating 164 passengers on this high-demand sector, showcasing the vast differences in operational scope within the country's domestic air network.

Carrier-Specific Long Hauls

Major airlines have their own definitions of long-haul within domestic Indian skies. For IndiGo and Air India Express, the Bengaluru-Srinagar route stands as their longest at 2,320 km. Akasa Air's longest service connects Mumbai to Guwahati, covering 2,074 km, while SpiceJet's longest route is Mumbai-Bagdogra, spanning 1,794 km. Intriguingly, these extensive routes for all five main carriers fall under Category II of the Route Dispersal Guidelines. These regulations are designed to ensure airlines allocate a portion of their capacity to less-served regions, including the Northeast, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the Andaman and Lakshadweep islands. Further highlighting operational diversity, IndiGo's longest flight using turboprop ATR aircraft is Kolkata-Raipur (711 km). SpiceJet offers India's longest turboprop route with its twice-weekly Delhi-Shillong service, covering an impressive 1,508 km.

Regional and International Journeys

Beyond the major carriers, regional airlines also operate significant routes. Alliance Air, while known for the shortest domestic flight, also manages an 887 km route from Bilaspur to Delhi using its ATR fleet, marking it as the longest ATR route in India. Fly91, a newer entrant, lists Goa-Jalgaon (608 km) as its longest service. Star Air, which exclusively uses Embraer aircraft, operates a 1,529 km route from Ahmedabad to Purnea, setting a record for the longest route flown by any regional carrier. On the international stage, Druk Air's Bagdogra-Paro flight is the shortest international service originating from India. For Indian carriers, IndiGo's Trichy-Jaffna route represents the shortest international offering. The longest international flight from India is United Airlines' Delhi-Newark service, closely followed by American Airlines' Delhi-New York route, demonstrating the growing demand for direct long-haul travel from India.
