Arrival and Calangute Charm
The journey into Goa began with a pre-booked airport cab via the Goa Miles app, costing Rs 1100, a stark contrast to typical local taxi rates. Accommodation
was secured at Staymaster Veridian in Calangute, chosen for its connectivity and the comfortable 2 BHK apartment that offered a peaceful retreat. The surroundings, with old homes and tall trees, set a serene tone. Evenings were spent exploring local eateries, including the historic Joseph's Bar, and later discovering Quinta Cantina, a unique bar blending Goan and Mexican flavors. Here, a delightful Taco Mix was enjoyed, and staff shared insights into local spirits. The day concluded with a local taxi ride back to Calangute, encountering a fare dispute that highlighted the importance of asserting knowledge of local areas.
Anjuna Beach Adventures
The second day commenced with a leisurely breakfast and a swim before heading to Anjuna Beach via a Goa Miles cab for Rs 280. At Anjuna, the focus shifted to the human connections made, particularly with speedboat pilots who offered unexpected kindness and support, even promising assistance if needed. This camaraderie proved invaluable when, needing to reach Slow Tide for a favorite dish, the pilots, recognizing the traveler walking alone, offered a ride on their scooty. This act of generosity, born from a shared experience at sea, ensured a timely reunion with the beloved prawns balchao, followed by a comfortable return to Calangute.
Mandrem's Serene Waters
The third day was dedicated to the simple pleasure of swimming. A local bus journey from Calangute to Mandrem cost just Rs 40, showcasing an affordable and immersive way to travel. Mandrem beach offered calm waters perfect for swimming, providing a sense of peace and gentle immersion. As the sun dipped, a spontaneous drum circle formed on the beach, a communal gathering that fostered connection among locals and travelers alike. This spirit of shared experience led to making new friends and enjoying a feast at Prana, sharing stories over local delicacies. This evening underscored how solo travel can soften the perceived distance between one's self-image and authentic being, fostering a sense of community.
Culinary Delights in Panjim
Day four was a culinary exploration, starting with a bus ride to Panjim for Rs 40. The morning was spent indulging in the abundant Kingfish Thali and Chonak Thali at Bombil, savoring the rich flavors and ceremonial presentation of Goan cuisine. Accompanying the meal were unique beverages like the Kokum Mojito, and the messy yet glorious Crab Xec Xec. Following this feast, a visit to Padaria Prazeres offered sweet indulgence with pastries like the pasteis de nata. The day concluded with an expensive but worthwhile cab ride to Saligao for a memorable meal at The Second House, featuring an exceptional seabass ceviche that masterfully blended Latin technique with Indian coastal proximity. The return journey to Calangute reinforced the value of prioritizing experiences over travel costs.
Exploring Calangute and Assagao
The penultimate day was about local immersion and relaxation. A leisurely walk around Calangute revealed the area's architectural details, from Portuguese balconies to azulejo tiles, highlighting Goa's harmonious blend of history and culture. The afternoon was spent exploring the bougainvillaea-lined streets of Assagao, followed by a trip to Vagator for Rs 300. The evening was spent at Hideaway, a bar that felt like a peaceful sanctuary. Here, a friend from the drum circle joined, and together they visited Little Vagator beach. A craving for something sweet led to a serradurra from a food truck, a delightful blend of textures and flavors. This day emphasized the ease of exploring local surroundings on foot and the joy of spontaneous encounters.
Farewell Bites and Reflections
The final day began with a late check-out from Veridian, followed by a stop at The Burger Factory in Anjuna for a satisfying meal of two hearty burgers. This marked the end of a trip that challenged the initial assumption that Goa was impractical for non-drivers. The experience proved that with thoughtful planning, a curious spirit, and an openness to local assistance, Goa is indeed a destination that welcomes all forms of exploration. The journey highlighted the freedom and quiet joy of solo travel, demonstrating that navigating the state without a personal vehicle is not only possible but also leads to a richer, more authentic experience.
