A plateau is a highland area consisting of flat terrain raised sharply above the surrounding area, from one side at least. Complete creation of natural
happenings, plateaus are magnificent places to visit. This is a way of getting closer to nature and understanding its happenings.
The Baghelkhand
Baghelkhand is a region, as well as a mountain range, covering the northeastern regions of Madhya Pradesh and a small area of southeastern Uttar Pradesh. Bagelkhand is surrounded by the Indo-Gangetic plains in the north and east, Bundelkhand in the west, and the Vindhya ranges in the south. Including the east of the Maikal Range, the region is made of limestones and sandstones. This plateau is at an average elevation of 300-600 m above sea level. If you have time, visit the streams such as Betwa, Dhawan, and Ken.
The Marwar Upland
Also known as the Upland of eastern Rajasthan, the Marwar Upland is a delight to the eyes, all thanks to its rolling plateau surrounded by rounded hills and forest. Located in the western part of the Aravali Range, this upland is at an altitude of 250 to 500 m above sea level. This region has been carved by erosion from the Banas River network. You will find sandstone, shales, and limestones of the Vindhayan period.
Madhya Bharat Plateau
This plateau comprises the basin of the Chambal River, which flows in a rift valley. An open rolling plateau, the Madhya Bharat Plateau, is made of old rocks. You will get to witness thick forests and the badlands of the Chambal River. It encompasses most of northwestern Madhya Pradesh state and central Rajasthan state. The plateau is located at an average elevation of about 1,650 feet, with erosions having created an almost level surface. The other major rivers are Banganga, Kunwari, Sind, Parbati, and Kali Sindh.
The Chotanagpur Plateau
A plateau covering much of Jharkhand, as well as the adjacent parts of Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh, the Chota Nagpur Plateau, is a continental plateau. The extensive land thrust area of this plateau is above the general land. The formation of this plateau is due to the continental uplift from forces acting deep inside the Earth. It is part of the Deccan Plate.
The other plateaus worth knowing and exploring are the Malwa Plateau and the Meghalaya Plateau, to name a few.
