GEM Mining Consulting has announced the successful application of its technology stack, which includes satellite-based interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR), to detect anomalous movement patterns in tailings storage facilities (TSFs). This technology serves as an early warning system for potential catastrophic failures. The study compared four major TSFs, including Brumadinho and Cadia, which experienced failures, and Ovejería and Las Tórtolas, which remained stable. The findings highlighted the ability of InSAR to identify deformation patterns that precede structural failures, as seen in the Brumadinho disaster, which resulted in over 270 fatalities. GEM aims to enhance risk management and public trust in mining operations through this technology.
