KoBold Metals, a U.S.-based mining company, has entered into a preliminary agreement with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for large-scale mineral exploration. The agreement was signed on July 17, witnessed by Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi, with Kizito Pakabomba, DRC Minister of Mines, and Benjamin Katabuka, Director at KoBold, as signatories. The focus of the deal is the Manono lithium deposit, one of the largest in the world. KoBold has committed over $1 billion to secure lithium supply for Western markets and plans to use advanced AI-driven technology for a broader exploration program across the DRC. Initial efforts include digitizing geological archives at the Royal Museum for Central Africa and submitting applications for exploration permits covering more than 1,600 km² of Congolese territory.
