According to Malaysia's home ministry, Bangladeshis now constitute over a third of Malaysia's foreign workforce, with more than 800,000 nationals holding valid employment permits. As of June 2025, there were 803,332 active Bangladeshi work permit holders, making Bangladesh the largest source of low-skilled labor for Malaysia. The influx of Bangladeshi workers has been facilitated by the Foreign Worker Recruitment Relaxation Plan, a temporary scheme to fast-track hiring. Despite the increase in arrivals, repatriations have continued, with thousands of workers being sent back each year.
