Maya McLeroy, a student at the University of Oregon's Clark Honors College, has self-published her poetry collection titled 'A Girl Is An Ocean.' Growing up in Newberg, Oregon, McLeroy has been writing since middle school, initially through her blog 'La Vie en Maya.' Her journey to self-publishing was catalyzed by a virtual writing workshop during the COVID-19 pandemic and further developed through the Kidd Creative Writing Workshop at her university. Encouraged by her mother, McLeroy spent a summer revising her poems and researching self-publishing platforms, eventually choosing Blurb's BookWright software for formatting and printing. Her collection was published in October 2024, just before her 21st birthday, and distributed across the United States.
