Pune News: Pune is set to move towards an underground road network to tackle its growing traffic problems. Speaking at a recent public event, Maharashtra

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said there is no land left in the city for new road construction. As a result, the focus will now shift to building tunnels and roads below the surface. He explained that traffic pressure on existing roads has crossed safe limits and that long-term solutions will require new and innovative thinking. “There is no land available for road construction, and flyover work is already under way. Therefore, the plan is to develop a network of underground roads in Pune. A 54 km tunnel network is proposed at an estimated cost of Rs 32,000 crore, with work expected to begin from Katraj,” he said, reported The Indian Express. At present, work on eight flyovers is under way across Pune, while plans for 13 more flyovers are ready. These projects aim to ease congestion at busy junctions and improve traffic flow in different parts of the city.

Pune Ring Road Likely to Cut 40% Traffic

He also spoke about the outer ring road, which is currently under construction. According to him, once completed, it will reduce traffic within the city by nearly 40 per cent. He said the state government has allocated Rs 55,000 crore for this project, and work has already begun on nine of the twelve planned phases, indicating steady progress.\n

\nOn Pune public transport, the minister said that the metro rail project was once only a proposal, but his government took concrete steps to make it a reality. At present, a 110 km metro network has been approved. Of this, 34 km is already operational, and another 23 km will become operational soon. He said the metro has now become a key part of Pune’s transport system. \n
